The following list shows the most important events in the history of Costa Rica:

  1. Costa Rica becomes an independent republic (Set-15,1821)
  2. Annexation of Nicoya to Costa Rica (Jul-25, 1824)
  3. Battle of Rivas (Apr-11, 1856)
  4. Foundation of the UCR (Agos-16, 1940)
  5. Foundation of the CCSS (Nov-1, 1942)
  6. Army abolition (Dec-1,1948)
  7. Women got the right to vote on popular elections (Jul-30, 1953)
  8. Costa Rican Constitution is modified to allow re-election of a president ( Jul-1, 2002)
  9. Referendum to take a decision about the CAFTA (Oct-7, 2007)
  10. First women to become president (Feb-7, 2012)



All these events have been important for Costa Rica because they have defined what the country is right now. We can see how over time the country has become a peaceful place to live, a nation with no army that is focus on developing the talent of its population; creating more opportunities to get better jobs and more chances to learn. These events have also set a context with equivalence of opportunities for men and women, where the discrimination for females has been decreasing over the years.
